Don’t laugh, but I’m totally hooked on this dish!

2 tablespoons light corn syrup
1 loaf of challah or brioche bread, sliced 1/2 inch thick
5 large eggs
1 1/2 cups half-and-half cream
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon Grand Marnier or orange liqueur (optional)
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup granulated sugar for caramelizing (optional)
Directions
1. In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the brown sugar and corn syrup, stirring until the sugar is dissolved and the mixture is smooth. Pour this mixture into a 9×13 inch baking dish.
